Meet Our Partners
The Quincy School~Community
Partners come in all shapes and sizes. We have Fortune 500 companies who
have been sending mentors into our schools for years. We have local
mom-and-pop shops who help out with school cleanups and bring the pizza to
feed everyone when the library is newly painted. There is a place for
you and your business, regardless of your size or how you wish to give.
Our Partners share one thing: a passion to make our schools better. Our Partners know that the education of our children is a vital part of everyone's future. They recognize that our children will be the future citizens and employees of tomorrow. Educating every child to their fullest potential is in everyone's best interest. Our Partners have the vision to make that commitment.
Here are a few partners and how they are giving (and getting).
Snug Harbor Community School has proudly welcomed
Altrusa International into their school for many years. The dedicated volunteers
assist with literacy
efforts at the school including regular reading days,
donations of books and more importantly, time spent encouraging young readers.
One of the early activities sponsored by Altrusa International was an all-day
Saturday literacy festival that was conducted as part of the annual “Make a
Difference Day.” Children were invited to come to the school on a Saturday for
fun, games, entertainment, and literacy activities. Every child who attended
was given a book to take home. The event was so successful that it was
commended by First Lady Laura Bush as a promising practice and was highlighted
in an article that appeared in Parade magazine.
Quincy Medical Center supports education throughout the city. For almost twenty years, Quincy Medical Center has partnered with QPS to provide a link between schools and health care. High school students get hands-on training and experience to prepare them for health careers. Elementary and middle school students learn about healthy living and take tours to make science lessons come alive. Quincy Medical is especially proud of the number of QPS alumni who are now a part of their work force. According to Dr. Gary Gibbons, President and CEO of Quincy Medical, the staff is especially proud to be nurturing the next generation of health care professionals.
Marshall Elementary School knows the value that one volunteer can make. For about 8 years, ABCD Foster Grandparents have been coming in 4 days a week. These dedicated seniors serve as classroom assistants, mentors and tutors. The seniors are patient and willing to work with students to improve basic skills. But, according to Vice-Principal Bill Bloomer, what really matters are the relationships that the seniors build with the students. The seniors provide a perspective that helps students understand the larger world - and are sometimes a living history lesson.
