Elementary School Programs

After School String Program

Lessons on violin, viola, and cello are offered to students in grades 1 through 5 after school throughout the school year. Students are given the opportunity to play in the orchestra and participate in string workshops at the QPS Saturday Conservatory. String lessons and orchestra are also offered for two weeks during the summer. Performances by the orchestra are held during the year.

Behavioral Growth and Development

Behavioral Growth and Development (BGD) is a substantially separate program for elementary students, grades 3 through 5, with social, emotional and/or behavioral issues that interfere with a successful full-time, general educational experience. This program is highly individualized, utilizing a wide range of behavior management techniques and strategies. Read more about our Special Education programs.

Business Partnerships

Community Partnership seeks to match businesses, community service agencies, and institutions of higher education with individual Quincy schools. The partnerships promote a relationship within which the organizations involved and the school students derive mutual benefit. Partnerships can be a dynamic, intra-community, intergenerational exchange that serves as a catalyst, becoming an important opportunity for growth within the Institutions and change within the schools. Community Service Learning

Community Service Learning (CSL) is an educational methodology in which service is an integral part of a regular academic classroom during regular school hours. A good CSL project addresses real needs of the community, helps students better understand academic subject matter, provides youth with leadership roles in their community, and brings about positive change. Community Service Learning is students, faculty and community agencies working together for a better tomorrow!

Educational Services to the Homeless

The Coordinator of Educational Services to the Homeless provides both support and concrete services to homeless students so that they may have stable educational experiences. The coordinator offers tutorial services to children and collaborates with local schools and community agencies to address the many needs of homeless families. The grant also provides resources for special student needs. Many creative and collaborative initiatives give students and their families the support they need during a difficult transition. Approximately 250 students from throughout the city receive services each year.

Elementary Laboratory Center

The Elementary Laboratory Center (ELC) is a one-day-per-week enrichment program for academically talented students in grade 5. The program is designed to broaden and deepen each student's knowledge base in the areas of language arts, social studies, mathematics, and science through the development of creative thinking, critical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Students who successfully complete this program may be invited to join our middle school Advanced Placement Center. Read more about our Gifted Programs.

English as a Second Language Service

Each elementary school offers English as a Second Language Services (ESL) to students whose first language is not English. There is one citywide middle and one citywide high school program offered to secondary students with English fluency ranging from 0 to 5, with students speaking one of the many languages and dialects spoken in Quincy. Enrichment Program - World Language

This program seeks to make exposure to a second language (French / Spanish) a positive and enjoyable experience for our elementary students. Meets once a week for one hour.

Extended Day Kindergarten

The full-school-day kindergarten curriculum is language-based, providing reinforcement and enrichment during the extended portion of the program. Children are selected based on developmental needs and Title I eligibility.

Health Fair

Quincy Public Schools sponsors an annual Health Fair in conjunction with local health organizations such as the American Lung Association, Quincy Health Department, New England Dairy Council, and Quincy Medical Center. Students display representations of the health curriculum, including anti-smoking, dental care, fire safety, alcohol abuse prevention, DARE, etc.

Intensive Special Needs Center-Elementary School

Intensive Special Needs Centers (ISNC) are substantially separate programs for preschool and elementary students whose developmental profile displays significant delays in multiple areas. The programs are highly structured, providing intensive language-based instruction and pragmatic skills training for language and social skills development. Kids Vote

Kids Vote teaches students about the voting process. Curriculum activities include mock debates, practical instruction on how to fill out voter registration forms, and activities to enhance citizenship. Students accompany their parents to the polls, simulating the actual voting experience.

Language Development Centers

Language Development Centers (LDC) are substantially separate classrooms for students of primary age (6-12) who demonstrate significant language / learning disabilities; including auditory, receptive language and / or verbal expressive deficits. This program is a language-based approach to learning, with particular emphasis placed on meeting the needs of the students' learning styles. Read more about our Special Education programs.

Learn-to-Swim

Learn-to-Swim is a citywide, grade 5 program, which is part of the physical education curriculum. The goal of Learn-to-Swim is to improve individual skills sufficient for deep water swimming. Read more about Athletics in Quincy.

Primary Transition Classes

The Primary Transition Class (PTC) is a one year placement for children of first grade age with significant delays in one or more of the following areas: cognitive, attention, perceptual, sensory, language, social/emotional or motor development.Read more about our Special Education programs.

Quincy Family Literacy Network

Family literacy brings parents and children together to learn, and reinforces the internal motivation both must have to succeed together. Adult Education classes, Active Parenting Classes, Parent/Child Activities are program services.

Quincy Public Schools Festival of Arts

This annual event occurs in May or June. The festival is a culminating celebration of the visual and performing arts that have been experienced by all students in grades kindergarten through grade 12.

Recycling

This program provides a consistent system-wide recycling awareness for students, teachers, custodians, administration, parents, food services personnel and the community. The program is designed to encourage and develop a variety of opportunities for students, staff, etc. to demonstrate that the reuse of materials is not only desirable, but also necessary in reducing waste products within the local community and global community.

School Breakfast Program

Quincy children may start their day with the School Breakfast Program, a Federal program that provides cash assistance for nonprofit breakfast programs. Children whose families meet income criteria may receive free or reduced-price breakfasts. Read more about Food Service.

School Lunch Program

Special Needs Learning Center

Special Needs Learning Center (SNLC) is a substantially separate classroom for elementary-level students. SNLC serves students who have been assessed with a global developmental disability. Summer Food Service Program

Summer Institute

The institute is an intensive two-week half-day enrichment program designed to meet and challenge the academic and artistic needs of students entering kindergarten through grade 8. Read more about Title 1 Programs. Read more about ESL programs.

Summer Scene

Summer Scene is a program for students entering grades 3 through 10. The goals of Summer Scene are to increase student proficiency in English/Language Arts, science, and math skills.

Transitional Bilingual Education Class

Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) classes are offered in Cantonese and Vietnamese. The classes are staffed by a bilingual teacher and in larger classes by a bilingual aide. All students requiring this program are invited to attend with the consent of their parents. Week of the Young Child
