STATE TOURNAMENT
First Round:
Feb. 28
, 2007 @ Hingham L(41-55)
A highly successful season came to a close tonight at Hingham High School as the 20th seeded Presidents fell to #4 Hingham.  A shaky start for Quincy resulted in an unsettling 9-0 deficit.  The seasoned veteran captains from last year's squad refused to let the game get out of hand, and the Presidents clawed their way back into the game.  A put-back by Liz Bock cut the lead to 1 at the half (24-23).  The early minutes of the second half were a see-saw affair in which Quincy found itself up 1 with 12 minutes to go.  A tough 4th foul called against Brighid Kyle sent the senior captain and defensive stopper to the bench and Hingham responded by rattling off a 9-0 run.  Trailing by 8 with two minutes remaining, the girls were forced to foul to no avail.  Meagan Tobin led Quincy with 14, Marybeth Torpey finished with 9 and Leslie Campbell & Brighid Kyle each chipped in 6.  The Presidents wrap up 2006-2007 season with 11 wins and 11 losses.

Preliminary Round:
Feb. 26
, 2007 @ Silver Lake W(46-41)
For the second year in a row, the Presidents are winners in the Big Dance.  The 20th seeded Quincy girls knocked off #13 Silver Lake last night on the road.  Quincy prevailied in what turned out to be a defensive battle.  Freshman Leslie Campbell and senior captain Brighid Kyle carried the scoring load early on with 5 points apiece in the opening period.  Leading by a single point (21-20) at the half, the Presidents were cautiously optimistic about their chances. The high-pressure defense began to take its toll on the Laker ball handlers in the second half and Q extended its lead to as much as 8.  Some hot shooting quickly narrowed that gap bringing them all the way back to within 2 with a minute and a half remaining.  Then Meagan "Big Time" Tobin did what she does best and nailed a clutch three-pointer.  This was her fifth three of the night and she finished the game with a career high 23 points while holding the opposing all-star guard to a mere 2.  The Presidents square off against #4 seeded Hingham this Wednesday night at 7:30.

Feb. 21, 2007 @ Hanover L(49-51)
In the last game of the 2006-2007 regular season, Quincy once again attempted to avenge an embarrassing early-season loss.  The Mariners handed us a 20 point loss in mid-December and we were determined to show them that we were a very different team these days.  We jumped out to a 27-21 lead at the half thanks to some hot shooting early on by Meagan Tobin and Jacqui Provenzano.  The second half saw an improved defensive effort for both teams and the Presidents built their lead to as much as 10 with 6 minutes remaining.  Then the Mariners made their big run thanks to some terrific offensive rebounding and some terrible officiating.  They took the lead with 26 seconds to go on an and-one foul call.  Meagan Tobin made a strong move to the hoop with 15 seconds to go drawing contact from two defenders, but did not get the call.  After one make and one miss on free throws by Hanover, she had one more chance to fire off a three at the buzzer.  Despite drawing contact again, again there was no call.  It was a frustrating way to lose a well-played game.  Our girls definitely showed that they are a team to be taken seriously as the tournament approaches.  In fact, in the four revenge games we played this year (Norwell, Hanover, Whitman, and North Quincy) the girls improved the scoring margins in their second games by 89 points overall.  That's a 22 p.p.g. improvement!

Feb. 16, 2007 vs. North Quincy L(51-52)
In front of a packed house, the Presidents looked to get revenge on the Red Raiders for their drubbing earlier in the season.  Before the opening tip, we took a moment to honor our three seniors (Brighid Kyle, Hope Collins, and Jacqui Provenzano) and their families.  These seniors along with Meagan Tobin and Marybeth Torpey started the game tonight and set the tone early.  They played with tremendous hustle and intensity helping Quincy to jump out to an early lead (as many as 14 points).  The scrappy play of Jacqui Provenzano fueled the run.  She finished with 14 rebounds and created 7 jump ball situations.  A 7-0 Raider run to finish the first half cut the lead to 27-20.  North continued to battle back in the second half, eventually taking the lead with under a minute to go.  Their hot 20/26 free throw shooting proved to be the difference as they survived a pair of late baskets by captain Meagan Tobin (22 points).  This loss drops Quincy to 10-10 overall and 7-6 in the ACL.

Feb. 13, 2007 @ Plymouth South W(58-40)
We're in.
Quincy High qualified for its fifth consecutive state tournament with an 18 point win over the Panthers of Plymouth South last night.  Brighid Kyle stepped up and provided the offensive firepower tonight scoring 13 missing only 2 shots from the field.  Her 8 first half points helped the Presidents open up a 10 point lead at halftime.  The Panthers cut the lead to 3 early in the second half, but the Quincy girls played defense with energy and determination, and eventually their press wore down the opposition.  Meagan Tobin recorded 13 in the effort and Jacquie Provenzano added 8 points as well as a solid defensive effort.  This non-league win brings the Presidents to 10-9 overall and 7-5 in the ACL.

Feb. 9, 2007 @ Marshfield L(40-46)
A cold start for the Presidents and the aggressive Rams offense led to a brutal 27-10 first half.  The team rallied in the second half behind 14-19 FT shooting and the post play of Freshman Leslie Campbell (16 points) and gradually began to chip away at the Marshfield lead.  Cutting the lead to 3 with 47 seconds remaining, the girls had a glimpse of hope, but the Rams hit their foul shots and held on by a thread.  Brighid Kyle also played well for the P's, finishing with 10 in the effort.  This loss drops Q to 9-9 and 7-5 in the ACL.

Feb. 6, 2007 vs. Whitman-Hanson W(52-49)
Three.  Three was the number of the night.  Quincy won it's third consecutive game against a Whitman team that has won the past three league titles and currently occupies the top spot this year as well.  In our first meeting, the Panthers rolled to a 22 point victory behind Emily Trapp's 28 points.  This game started out looking like it might be a second helping of the same with Whitman opening up a 14-3 lead in the opening minutes.  The Presidents eventually found their rhythm largely thanks to the scalding hot shooting of Meagan Tobin who hit three 3's and finished the half with 13.  Tobin took her play to another level tonight relentlessly attacking the hoop and hitting the outside jumper.  Despite the hot shooting, Quincy still trailed by 7 going into the break.  At halftime, the girls refocused on defense and came out determined not to back down.  They responded by holding the Panthers to only 14 second half points.  The tireless defensive effort of Marybeth Torpey made it tough for the league's leading scorer (Trapp) to get her hands on the ball.  Despite her 5 inch height advantage, she was only able to score 8 points in the second half.  The rest of the team amped up the ball pressure and good things started to happen.  Quincy gradually cut into the lead and narrowed it to a razor thin margin for much of the last 3 minutes.  Taking advantage of a mismatch of her own, Freshman Leslie Campbell came up with two clutch baskets in the second half to go with her 9 offensive rebounds (11 points, 10 rebounds total).  The post play of senior Hope Collins proved to be the straw that broke the Panthers back as her 4 points all came late in the game with the final hoop tying the score at 49 as the shot clock expired.  After a big stop at the other end, the girls faced a tie score with 24 seconds remaining.  After working the ball around to allow time to tick away, it found its way into the hands of all-star point guard Marybeth Torpey.  Without hesitation, she stepped up and drilled a monumental 3-pointer with 6 seconds to go.  Despite their best efforts, Whitman was unable to get a shot off in the final ticks.  For the second straight year, Quincy acted as the spoiler, defeating the champs in our home gym.

Feb. 2, 2007 @ Plymouth North W(60-41)
The girls picked up where they left off last night, outscoring the Eagles 24-3 to start the game.  Their stingy press only allowed Plymouth to get past half court 4 times in the first 8 minutes.  The hot first half shooting of Marybeth Torpey (3 threes) and Meagan Tobin (2 threes) was too much to handle giving Quincy a 35-13 lead going into the break.  Torpey finished with a season-high 18 points and 7 assists, Tobin had 13.  Also playing well were senior Brighid Kyle with 8 points and juniors Kathryn Carella and Julie Kisielius with 5 points apiece.  Sophomore Alyssa Mullen chipped in 4.
The Presidents are now 8-8 and 6-4 in the conference.

Feb. 1, 2007 vs. Norwell W(58-38)
Tonight was described by the coaches as "the biggest game of the year" and the girls stepped up to the challenge.  The Presidents avenged their season-opening loss by thoroughly handling this unsuspecting Norwell team.  The tri-captains all came up big tonight.  Meagan Tobin started out cold, but quickly heated up scoring 13 first half points and finishing with a season-high 22 (including 4 three-pointers).  Marybeth Torpey also played a huge game scoring 11 points and directing the offense.  Brighid Kyle brought hit several key jumpers early on and finished with 11 as well.  The story of the night wasn't shooting though, it was the improved intensity of the Quincy defense.  The white jerseys were everywhere, diving, scrapping, and hustling to every loose ball.  Marybeth Torpey set the tone with her tremendous individual man to man on Norwell's superstar Katelyn Stravinsky.
This win put Quincy back in the hunt for tournament.  They are now 7-8 and need 3 wins out of their next 6 games to qualify.

Jan. 26, 2007 @ Fontbonne L (38-56)
The Presidents did not look very presidential this evening in a frustrating loss to the Ducks of Fontbonne Academy.  After a ridiculous first half that featured 17 turnovers and only 10 points, Quincy put together a better second half, winning the period by 1.  Sadly, it was too little too late.  Meagan Tobin led with 10 points.

Jan. 26, 2007 @ North Quincy L(28-52)
The team faced off against the league-leading Raiders tonight and things did not go well.  The seniors of NQ set the tone early establishing a lead despite some hot shooting early by Quincy's senior captain Brighid Kyle (9 pts).  When the usual starting lineup returned for North, they quickly built on that lead thanks to second-chance points off of offensive rebounds.  On the other end of the floor, the Presidents could never get it going offensively, managing only 14 points in the first half of play.  Some nights the shots just won't fall.  Tonight was one of those nights.  Hilary Mills and the other reserves provided a spark late in the game reminding the team and our fans that we play with pride and intensity regardless of the score.

Jan. 23, 2007 vs. Marshfield W(41-40)
High drama in the Monroe-MacLean gymnasium tonight as the host Presidents took their first and only lead of the game on a deep three-pointer by captain Meagan Tobin with under 30 seconds to go.  The Rams of Marshfield visited Quincy for the first time as members of the ACL and it was a game to remember.  After some sloppy play that resulted in a meager 16 points at the half, the Presidents were relieved to only trail by 2 at the break. The Rams extended this lead to as many as 10 during the second half of play.  Just as the game was beginning to seem out of reach, Quincy found its spark. After spending much of the game on the sidelines with foul trouble, Brighid Kyle stepped up to lead a charge back from 6 points down with 1:12 remaining.  With 4 clutch free throws and a steal for a layup, Brighid opened the door for a possible last second victory.  Meagan Tobin was ready and waiting to step up and deliver.  Her three gave Quincy a 1 point advantage and that proved to be enough as Marshfield's last second attempt fell short.  This win takes the Presidents to 6-6 overall and 5-3 in the league.

Jan. 19, 2007 vs. Falmouth L(36-58)
19% from the floor and 36% from the free throw line doesn't get the job done.  Despite only 11 turnovers, the presidents were unable to convert on many of their 56 shot attempts and only managed 15 points at the half.  On the other side of the court, the first place Clippers came into town shooting the ball extremely well.  Their hot shooting was too much to handle tonight for Quincy.  Leading scorers for Quincy were Brighid Kyle and Meagan Tobin with 11 points apiece.

Jan. 15, 2007 @ Sandwich W(60-45)
After last Friday's dismal Cape Cod outing, the girls rode into Sandwich on a mission.  In a back and forth first half that ended with Q up 27-24, the girls succeeded in establishing their twin goals of a strong defensive presence and a sense of confidence on the offensive end.  Meagan Tobin (19 points) led the charge early, scoring 10 first half points and drawing 3 quick fouls on the star guard for Sandwich.  Marybeth Torpey returned from injury to have her best game of the season, scoring 17 points on near-perfect shooting.  Brighid Kyle and Leslie Campbell added 8 points apiece and collaborated to force 7 turnovers on their side of the press.  Hope Collins came off the bench in response to some early foul trouble and had a huge defensive game, stopping her 6'1" counterpart in her tracks and leading the team in rebounding.
This win takes the Presidents to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in the ACL.

Jan. 12, 2007 @ Dennis-Yarmouth L(41-45)
The Quincy girls team was caught off guard by the 1-9 Dolphins of Dennis-Yarmouth.  In our most frustrating game of the season thus far, the girls were never able to get things going.  Playing without all-star point guard Marybeth Torpey (injured), the Presidents were forced to shift leading scorer Meagan Tobin to the point position.  Despite a hard hit to the nose which sidelined her for a good part of the first half, Tobin chipped in 8 points in the loss.  Brighid Kyle led the team with 9.

Jan. 9, 2007 @ Whitman-Hanson L(29-51)
Tonight was a frustrating loss for our girls on the road vs. the reigning league champs.  Despite nearly 6 scoreless opening minutes and a first half that netted only 12 points total, the girls were still in the game at the intermission, trailing by 12.  A surge to start the second half, due largely to an increased defensive intensity and some hot shooting my Meagan Tobin, cut the lead to 5.  Unfortunately, some critical turnovers, widespread foul trouble, and the clutch play of Whitman's star sophomore Emily Trapp proved to be too much for the Presidents on this night as the Panthers regained their composure and put the game out of reach.

Jan. 5, 2007 vs. Plymouth South  W(56 - 37)
The Presidents won their third straight defeating Plymouth South at home tonight 56-37.  The girls never trailed, taking an early lead in this contest and maintaining it throughout.  Behind 14 first half points from Freshman Leslie Campbell, who finished with a game and career high 18, the presidents cruised to a 34-21 lead at the break.  The stubborn Panthers refused to give in until a blistering 10-0 run early in the second half sealed the victory.  The defensive intensity of Brighid Kyle and Marybeth Torpey (8 points and 5 blocks) fueled the decisive run. Tonight proved to be a breakout game for junior center Liz Bock who chipped in 8 points while snagging a season-high 13 rebounds.  Also playing well was Meagan Tobin who finished with 9 points and Kathryn Carella with 5.  The team is now 4-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the ACL.

Jan. 2, 2007 vs. Plymouth North  W(53 - 33)
The Quincy girls proved to the Eagles of Plymouth North that there is indeed another team in the ACL North to be reckoned with by defeating them 53 - 33 last night.  The girls jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.  A strong first half performance gave the girls a 34-18 lead at the half behind Meagan Tobin's 9 and Leslie Campbell's 12 at the break.  Campbell, a freshman, had a breakout game scoring her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Brighid Kyle came up big with 10 points on 6 of 6 free throw shooting and Marybeth Torpey chipped in 8 points to go with her 5 blocked shots.  Off the bench the team got an impressive defensive effort from Kathryn Carella and Hilary Mills scored a hoop for the third consecutive game.  This was a big home win for the Presidents against an up-and-coming Plymouth team giving the girls a 2-0 record in the league and a 3-3 record overall.

Dedham Christmas Tourney
Dec. 28, 2006 vs. Fenway W (50-20)
The second game of the Christmas Tourney proved to be a better showing for Quincy as they cruised to a convincing 50-20 victory over Fenway.  The girls jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back, leading 44-8 at the half.  Leading the Quincy charge was Meagan Tobin with 16 points on 4 of 4 three-point shooting.  Leslie Campbell contributed to the initial run scoring 6 in the opening period.  Also playing well was senior Jacqueline Provenzano who provided a spark off the bench scoring 9, grabbing 9 rebounds, and blocking 3 shots.  Junior center Kerri Ryan also played big scoring 8 points in the first half.  This victory brings the presidents to 2-3 overall heading into league play.

Dec. 27, 2006  vs. Foxborough  L(20 - 42)
The shots just wouldn't fall for Quincy this afternoon in the opening round of the Dedham Holiday Classic.  The girls struggled to find their mark against a respectable Foxborough team and after trailing early were never able to turn it around.  Brighid Kyle led the Presidents with 10 points.

Dec. 22, 2006 vs. Nauset  W(58 - 35)
The girls won their first game tonight on their home court, beating Nauset High School convincingly.  The team looked aggressive and intense as they generated turnovers and ran the floor in the first half.  Despite poor shooting percentage, Quincy led at the half 29-13.  Some early foul trouble in the second half allowed Nauset to keep the game in range until two key three pointers by Meagan Tobin finished them off.  She finished with a game high 21 points.  Also playing well were Marybeth Torpey with 10 points and 6 steals, Leslie Campbell with 6 points and 5 rebounds, and Liz Bock with 9 rebounds.  The reserves made significant contributions tonight, especially senior Hope Collins in her first game back from a prolonged illness, and junior Kathryn Carella who chipped in 5 points in the effort.

Dec. 15, 2006 vs. Hanover  L(42 - 62)
The girls lost their home opener tonight to a very tough Hanover team.  The game was intense right from the onset with both teams coming out in a press and looking to push the tempo.  Meagan Tobin's scintillating 17 point first half performance kept it close throughout and Quincy trailed 24-28 at the half.  Despite a solid defensive effort by the home team, the Hanover girls took command early in the second half.  Also notable for the presidents were Marybeth Torpey with 8 points, Brighid Kyle with 5 steals, Leslie Campbell with 6 points and 7 rebounds, and senior transfer Jackie Provenzano with 5 points and 7 rebounds, 5 of which came at the offensive end.  The girls will have a chance to get their revenge in the last game of the regular season on February 21st at Hanover.

Dec. 12, 2006 @ Norwell   L(56 - 59)
The Presidents struggled early on in their season opener, committing 14 first half turnovers and trailed by 16 at the half.  The team refused to give up in the second half and played with a new level of intensity cutting the lead to 1 with a minute to go.  This was largely due to the effectiveness of their full-court press.  Brighid Kyle, though struggling with foul trouble all game, provided the defensive spark that fueled the rally.  Marybeth Torpey also came up big in the second half scoring all of her 14 points in the period.  The big surprise was the play of Freshman Leslie Campbell, who contributed 8 points in her first varsity game.  Unfortunately, despite some late game heroics by Meagan Tobin, who finished with a team-high 20 points, the Presidents came up short losing 59-56.  It was a tough loss, but one in which the girls got a glimpse of their potential as a team.
