About Us
Atherton Hough Elementary was named for a well-respected political and religious
leader of the seventeenth century. Atherton Hough was the mayor of
Boston, England, who left his home to come to America because of his
religious beliefs. In 1635, Hough was elected assistant to the
governor of Massachusetts and allotted 600 acres of land - which later
was named Hough's Neck in Quincy. In the nineteenth century, Hough's Neck became one of the
premier summer resorts in the Boston area,
served by trolley lines and steamers. The summer visitors built
cottages which, over time, were converted to year-round residences.
Atherton Hough Elementary was founded in 1911. Beginning with four
rooms and 162 pupils, Atherton Hough now has grown to 21 classrooms to
serve the children of Hough's Neck.

Academics
Elementary School is an important first step in your child's education. Quincy Public Schools are there from the first time your kindergartener picks out a book at the school library to the first grader having success in math to upper grades where students take their basis of knowledge and expand it to more advanced thinking, Want to know more? You can read about the elementary curriculum and standards which detail exactly what your child is learning at every stage of their educational careers.
Programs
At Atherton Hough, learning takes place in many ways and in many places beyond the classroom. In addition to following the Quincy Public Schools curriculum, and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, we offer many special programs within the school day. We offer an Open House/Curriculum Night at the beginning of the school year, we have many seasonal and holiday music programs, and educational field trips.
In addition to our regular school day, we have many extra programs such as a Before-School Enrichment Center, an After-School Art Program, a Volleyball Program, and a Literature program. We also offer an after-school day care program, sponsored by Quincy After-School Day Care.

Parents
Our parents have the opportunity to become actively involved in our Parent Volunteer Program and our PTA. This group meets monthly to discuss school activities and ways in which to raise funds to support and enrich our educational programs. Our PTA members are involved in committees to enhance our school through fundraisers, bake sales, book fairs, an ice cream sundae party, school logo clothing sales, school photos, and the fifth grade yearbook. They also purchase homework folders and Atherton Hough pencils at the beginning of each marking term. The PTA also reminds you that it is the volunteers who make our events so successful. Box tops, empty laser and ink cartridges, and pennies are being collected again this year.
We welcome suggestions and comments regarding any of our school and PTA sponsored programs.
