If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason please call the school in the morning to report it. If we do not receive a call from you the attendance clerk will try to call a parent/guardian at home or the work place. If no contact is made your child may be considered truant.

Dismissals:

If you know ahead of time that your child is to be dismissed from school, please send in a note with your child indicating the time and general reason.

Tardiness:

If your child is going to be late to school, a parental note is required explaining the tardiness. It is also expected that you indicate the time you expect your child to arrive at school. If a student enters school between 8:15 - 9:30 a.m. without a note he/she will be admitted to school and a note must be sent to school the next day.  Students whose tardiness is unexcused may be kept after school. Students who are repeatedly tardy to school may have a suspension hearing with parent/guardian.

Do you serve breakfast?

Breakfast is available every morning immediately before school starts at all schools in Quincy. Breakfast consists of a selection of cereals, muffins, bagels, peanut butter, cream cheese, fresh fruit, fruit juice and milk.

What does breakfast cost?

The cost for breakfast is $1.00 at middle schools. At the secondary level breakfast ala carte items are also available for purchase.  Students who are eligible for Free or Reduced price lunches are automatically eligible for free or reduced price breakfast. The cost for a reduced price breakfast is 25 cents. Click here more information on eligibility requirements for free and reduced lunch.

How much does lunch cost?

Middle School full-price student lunch is $1.75.   The cost for a reduced price lunch is 40 cents.  Milk is served with all lunches.  The cost of purchasing milk only is 40 cents and milk choices include 2%, 1%, and 1% chocolate.   Some lunches also include fruit juices in addition to the milk.

Where can I view a lunch menu?

Check out the calendar page and click on the school level (elementary, secondary) to view current menus.

Homework:

Homework assignments differ, depending upon the student's ability, potential, and need. You are expected to complete assignments carefully in order to reinforce and enrich classroom learning experiences. What you and your parents can expect:

Homework is assigned on a regular basis.

Homework is usually discussed in class, collected, and graded within reasonable time for each student, normally within a week.

A record is kept of homework grades and assignments completed.

Students have reasonable notice of long term assignments. Time must be planned for these assignments.

Meeting with your child's teacher :

Parents wishing a conference with their child's teaching teams should call the Guidance Office and make an appointment to meet during the team's preparation period.

Radios, cell phones, MP3 players and electronic devices:

Students are not permitted to use electronic devices such as radios, tape or disc players, beepers, portable phones or other electronic communication devices during school hours. They will be confiscated.

School Cancellation:

If regularly scheduled classes are canceled or delayed for any reason, announcements will be made over AM radio stations WJDA (1300), WBZ (1030), WRKO (680), and Boston television channels 4, 5, and 7. Due to unforeseen emergencies (usually weather), it may be necessary to close school early to insure the safety of our students. Parents and students should discuss what to do when/if this situation occurs. This is especially important when parents are away from home during the school day. It is not possible for the schools to notify parents in advance of such an emergency.

Dress Code:

Each student's hairstyle, appearance and manner of dress are determined by the student and his/her parent or guardian, unless these present a danger to the student's health or safety, interfere with school work or create a classroom or school disruption. Students may be sent home to change clothes. No hats, coats or sunglasses may be worn in the building.

About Us

broad meadows school Established in 1957, Broad Meadows Middle School has become one of Quincy's finest middle schools. With a diverse population that draws from several parts of the city, Meadows possesses a special multicultural atmosphere upon which it thrives. Known for its outstanding curriculum and dedicated staff, the school has been referred to as "a living, breathing, vital example of middle level education at its best." Our primary mission is to provide the finest education possible to each student by offering a challenging academic curriculum, a nurturing environment for the middle school child, and a positive school climate which encourages social growth.

The school also provides a variety of opportunities for students to celebrate their diversity, develop an appreciation for the arts, and encourages opportunities such as community service and global awareness to foster a sense of social responsibility. In September of 1991, Broad Meadows was recognized as a National School Of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education's Secondary School Recognition Program. In addition, Broad Meadows was one of the only middle schools in the country to receive the "Blue Ribbon Award" in both History and The Arts Education. In 1996, Meadows was also bestowed the prestigious Reebok International Human Rights Award for its renowned work with child labor. In 1998, The U.S. Agency for International Development made Meadows the first school ever to receive its "Domestic Partner Award." For 50 years Broad Meadows Middle School, "Home of the Breakers" has truly been a special place.

Academics

Our middle school teachers have developed a syllabus for each of the courses that they teach.  These syllabi will provide an overview of the major topics that are covered in each course at each grade level, and these topics are aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in each academic area.  In addition to the major topics, the syllabus contains a list of important text and learning materials, types of assessments that will be used, and a homework policy and grading policy. Programs

Broad Meadows offers a variety of activities before and after school. Students are encouraged to participate in these programs so that they have a chance to meet new friends, experience new initiatives, exhibit their talents, and enjoy the complete middle school experience. Periodically, the Student Council will schedule dances for Broad Meadows students in grades 6, 7, and 8. These events are designed so students can enjoy music and refreshments and socialize together after school. Dances, like other extra curricular activities, are governed by the same behavior expectations as regular school activities.

Sports activities include intramural and extramural experiences such as flag football, cross country, volleyball, basketball, swimming, wrestling, and track. Activities and clubs include Drama, Band, Chorus, DARE, Student Council, Yearbook, Art, Computer Club, Chess Club, Operation Days Work, Lego Robotics, Human Rights Team, Tennis, Worker-Bees, Homework Center, 8th Grade Washington Trip, field trips and end of the year outings.
