A COURSE SYLLABUS IS AVAILABLE FOR EACH OF THE COURSES OFFERED BELOW:
Grade eleven English courses, with the exception of Advanced Placement English 11, most are semester courses carrying 2 ½ points each. Students are expected to meet with their present English teachers for assistance in selection of courses. It is generally recommended that students choose a college or non-college program to meet their career objectives.

In American Literature students explore the development of American thought in literature through thematic and chronological approaches. A diverse cross-section of works that contributed to our literary heritage will be examined and analyzed. Readings include pieces from Romanticism, Transcendentalism and Realism. Significant works of American Literature are studied in depth in this reading-intensive course. Exposure to the values and cultural mores of the historical periods gives the students the opportunity to reflect on the complex forces at play in the development of our national literature. Students explore various genres and study a wide range of authors, including Hawthorne, Poe, Twain, Crane, Miller, and Wright, among many others. Analytical and interpretive skills are utilized in class discussions, tests, essay writing and research. In addition to class assignments, independent study of one additional work is assigned and required.

The focus of College Writing Honors in Grade 11 is learning how to format all types of essays required at the college level. Included essays in this course are: Example, Process, Classification, Cause and Effect, Comparison and Contrast, Description, and the Persuasion paper. In addition, an eight to ten page research paper is required. The emphasis for all students is learning the writing process: developing a clear thesis, reviewing the five-step process, and constructing the five-paragraph essay. Peer-group editing, conferencing and cooperative learning groups are examples of the activities in this course. Learning the structure of a precis and using vocabulary, and language/writing skills are also major components of the course.

Journalism is the collecting, writing, editing, and dissemination of news. This course will focus on the development of the students' writing skills through the composition of news stories, features, editorials and reviews. Special attention will be given to interview techniques, attention to detail, accuracy, critical thinking and grammar.

The course content of 11AP emphasizes great works of American
Literature, with close reading and analysis of several master works
supplemented by critical studies. Frequent writing assignments are
required and are assessed by a rubric that, at the top level, requires
mastery of manuscript form, full development of ideas, stylish use of
language, ample use of detail, and logical organization. Students
are required to make oral presentations and are encouraged to
participate in various essay and oratorical contest. SAT
preparation is also offered.
College Board Review
This course will be recommended for all college-bound juniors in
addition to their regular English and Math courses. It is also
recommended for any student who is interested in taking the SAT's. The
course will meet 6 days in the 6 day cycle--3 English, 3 Math for one
semester. The English program will also prepare students for the Test of
Standard Written English and the English Achievement Test. Emphasis will
be placed on reading comprehension, vocabulary, diction and usage. The
Math program will review major topics in arithmetic, geometry, and
algebra. Students will also learn useful test-taking strategies.
