The Foreign Language Program at North Quincy High School aims to develop the students' ability to communicate in another language and gain an understanding and appreciation of other cultures. Our program integrates the Strands and Standards of the Massachusetts Foreign Languages Framework in all languages, with learning activities appropriate to the level of instruction. Included in the courses described is a variety of co-curricular activities, such as use of the language laboratory, audio-visual materials, College Board Achievement preparation (where applicable), field trips, and other cultural experiences.

It should be noted that all Massachusetts state colleges/universities require 2 years of high school foreign language study for admission. Most private colleges/universities seek 3 or more years of preparation in this area.

All members of the Class of 2003 and beyond are required to pass two years of a foreign language during their freshman and sophomore years.

Prerequisites: A student must pass each year of a foreign language before continuing into the next sequential course.

In order to continue study at the Honors level, a student must maintain a final average of at least 75; at the Advanced level (if offered), a final average of at least 80.

A student who achieves a final average of 90 or higher at the Standard level may be eligible to move to the Honors level provided that supplementary work is done during the summer to prepare for the higher level. Teacher recommendation is required.

A student who achieves a final average of 90 or higher at the Honors level may be eligible to move to the Advanced level (if offered) provided that supplementary work is done during the summer to prepare for the higher level. Teacher recommendation is required.

A grade of 65 is considered passing but indicates insufficient achievement for continuation at the present level. The student must drop his/her level, take a review or summer school course to bring grade up to 70, or repeat the course (with no graduation points).

A grade below 65 is not passing.  In order to continue, the student must repeat the course in summer school or the following year.

Incoming 9th graders are placed at appropriate levels based on their English level and grades and teacher recommendations.
