American Development
Is America the land of opportunity? This
question will be a recurring theme during this semester. America's
growth and development will be examined against the backdrop of
burgeoning nationalism as the United States attempts to refine its
society at home and its leadership role in the world. The political
structure is challenged by Civil War and inadequate Reconstruction. The
benefits of urbanization, economic growth, and an expanding population
are disrupted by the recurrent dislocations of the business cycle.
During this era two key issues emerge for the nation. To what extend
should government be involved in the quest for economic, social, and
political justice for all? And to what extent should America involve its
ideals in world events. The first question, sparked by the Populist and
Progressive movements, culminated in the New Deal. The second resulted
in the crusading spirit of the quest for empire, the fight for democracy
in a world war, and a subsequent return to "Isolationism."
These historic events will be examined in relation to current policy and
issues facing Americans in the new millennium.
