A Ninth Grade Career Exploration and Academic Support Program


SKILLS PLUS CAREER CONNECTIONS
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to explore careers and prepare an educational plan. A major goal of this course is to enhance students educational foundation in the core subjects by providing them with the structure to reinforce their knowledge and apply it in real world applications.

The Skills Plus/Career Connections program allows ninth grade students to explore all technical programs offered at the CTE. Academic reinforcement will be included in these areas, as will reading and writing.

Activities are designed to introduce students to career options, academic requirements, develop technical skills, and assist students with organizational and study skills. Opportunities for using technology, tools, and systems are built into the clusters.

GRADING:
This course is offered at Honors and Standard levels. Students will be graded in each cluster. The grades will be averaged for the year. Grading criteria include: attendance, effort, attitude/motivation, project completion and writing assignments.

The CLUSTERS
Automotive and Finance
Design a car, change the oil, and customize the paint! Students will explore the many opportunities this industry has to offer and will learn how to manufacture, finance, and market a product.

Culinary Arts
Students will spend time in the kitchen, the bakery, and the restaurant learning how these unique skills and programs team to insure that an establishment can function smoothly.

Communication/Graphics
Produce a video, create a newspaper! Students will explore a variety of experiences and use different media to discover, express and communicate their findings.
English Language Arts and Drama will be included.

Construction Technologies
New homes, old homes, a major investment! Whether you become a plumber, architect, electrician or carpenter, you surely will need to call one someday. This cluster will give students the knowledge and skills needed to understand this complex and booming industry.

Engineering Technologies
Design a building, construct a control circuit, and build and program a robot! Students will learn what design, engineering and manufacturing careers are and how science plays a role in all of them.

Leadership
Students will engage in activities that allow the development of their skills to become an important part of our school community and society. Students will focus on their interests, learning styles, temperaments, and societal responsibilities while setting goals for their high school careers.

Health & Human Services
Enjoy working with people? Explore careers in Health & Human Services while earning your American Red Cross certification in Adult CPR.

Study Skills
Students will gain skills in a variety of areas that will facilitate their transitions to high school.
