The science curriculum at Quincy High School is designed to meet the
science learning standards of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
and the objectives of the Student Centered Learning System of The Quincy
Public Schools and to support the Quincy High School Mission Statement.
Science courses are inquiry-based and stress scientific literacy,
critical thinking, and problem solving skills. A wide variety of
learning activities including extensive laboratory work, field trips,
classroom use of computers, access to the Internet, audiovisual aids,
and other technology enhances the classroom experience. All science
classes at Quincy High School have a double laboratory period, once
every four days.
Student progress is assessed by varied methods such as portfolios,
notebooks, performance tasks, individual and group presentations, and
projects as well as written tests, papers and reports. Students are
informed of the ways in which they will be assessed and what they must
accomplish in each class.
All students must pass three science courses in order to graduate.
It is strongly recommended that students preparing for college follow a
four-year sequence of science courses, usually, earth science, biology,
chemistry and physics, at the honors or advanced level.
All ninth and tenth grade students must take a science course. Most
ninth graders will select an Earth Science class. All students must pass
a ninth grade science before proceeding to a grade ten science class.
Tenth grade students must take a biology class unless they have taken
biology in the ninth grade. Students who demonstrate high ability and
interest in science may skip earth science and select Accelerated
Biology 2014 in the ninth grade and chemistry in the tenth grade. These
students must demonstrate that they have already met the Massachusetts
Curriculum Standards for grade nine in physical science and in earth and
space science by passing a placement examination at the end of the
eighth grade.
Please read the course descriptions carefully. It is important that
parents and students follow the prerequisites when selecting a science
course. All students must pass three years of science in order to
