Freshman Seminar
A Ninth Grade Career Exploration Program "Planning for a Successful Future" This course is designed to give students the opportunity to explore careers
and prepare an educational plan. A major goal of this course is to enhance
students educational foundation in the core subjects by providing them with the
structure to reinforce their knowledge and apply it in real world applications.
GRADING CRITERIA: This course is offered at Honors and Standard levels.
Students will be graded in each cluster. The grades will be averaged for the
year. Grading include: attendance, effort, attitude/motivation, project
completion and writing assignments. * Organization/Time Management Learn about nutrition and healthy choices. Students will spend time in the
kitchen, the bakery, and the restaurant learning how these unique skills and
programs team to ensure that an establishment can function smoothly. Produce a video, start a business, and create a newspaper! Students will explore
a variety of experiences and use different media to discover, express and
communicate their findings. Enjoy working with people? Explore careers in Health, Human Services, and
Education while earning your American Red Cross certification in CPR. New homes, old homes, a major investment! Whether you become a plumber,
electrician or carpenter, you surely will need to call one someday. This cluster gives
students the knowledge and skills needed to understand this complex and growing industry.
Design a building, construct a control circuit, build and program a robot!
Students will learn what design, engineering, and manufacturing careers are and
how science plays a role in all of them. Students will engage in activities which develop skills to become an important
part of our school community and society. Students will focus on communication,
team building, self awareness, and self challenge skills. Design a car, change the oil, customize the paint and explore the systems needed
to keep a vehicle functioning. The transportation industry is booming;
students will learn about the many career opportunities available to them in
local industry, and what it takes to buy a car and keep it operational.
The Freshmen Seminar program allows ninth grade students to explore all
technical programs offered at Quincy High School. Academic reinforcement in
reading and writing will be included. Activities are designed to introduce
students to career options, academic requirements, develop technical
skills, and assist students with organizational and study skills. Opportunities
for using technology, tools, and systems are built into the
clusters.
