Fall 2022 Back to School Letter

Fall 2022 Back to School Letter
Posted on 09/02/2022

Dear Parents and Guardians of Quincy Public Schools Students:

Welcome back for the start of the 2022-2023 school year!  At all school sites and here at the Coddington Building, Quincy Public Schools staff members are busy with preparations for the new school year.  Principals and their office staff members are ready to assist with registration, transfers, and any other concerns.  Our eleven elementary schools are ready to welcome the QPS Class of 2035 with over 700 new Kindergarten students.

The dedicated professional staff of the Quincy Public Schools is looking forward to a year filled with a variety of learning experiences and accomplishments for your students.  Students from all grade levels participated in Summer Extended Educational programs that provided academic and enrichment opportunities and employment through the Quincy Summer YouthWorks Program.

During the development of this year’s budget, Mayor Koch and the School Committee collaborated with the Superintendent’s Leadership and Principal Teams to prioritize maintaining class sizes within the range of School Committee guidelines through the creation of additional academic classroom and support positions.  New professional staff members will participate in a two-day orientation on August 31 and September 1, including meeting with the Mayor, School Committee, and members of the Superintendent’s Leadership and Principal Teams to learn about their professional responsibilities, the many programs and services offered by Quincy Public Schools, and the mentoring program for new staff.

To assist with continuing needs for upgraded educational technology, installations of new desktops and laptops and educational software are ongoing throughout the school system.   Our partners in the Quincy School~Community Partnership continue to enhance our students’ educational opportunities through supporting the robotics program for Grades 5-12, providing backpacks and school supplies for students and staff, real-work experiences for high school Career Vocational Technical Education students, and funding the mentoring program for new professional staff.  At all levels, extended day opportunities will be available “beyond the bell” for academic enrichment, the arts, and athletics.

Our school buildings will be ready for the new school year, with the Public Buildings Maintenance staff completing improvements such as installing new floors, carpeting, and ceiling tiles; repainting classrooms; and repairs to building mechanicals.  Custodians across the school system have worked diligently all summer to prepare classrooms and offices for the new school year.  As always, we are grateful for the support of the Park Department in maintaining and improving the landscaping at our school buildings.

As the new school year begins, please remember that the most meaningful factor in assisting students to have a successful school experience is the participation of their parents and guardians.  In order to help your children attain their goals, we need your involvement, whether it be through attending parent-teacher conferences and Parent Academy events, volunteering in your child’s school, and most importantly, reinforcing the importance of on-time school attendance, appropriate behavior and class participation, and completion of schoolwork.  You can also stay informed about your child’s school and all of Quincy Public Schools through our website quincypublicschools.com or by following us on Facebook or Twitter (@QuincyPS).  Updates on school programs and initiatives will be presented at upcoming School Committee meetings, the first of which will be held on Wednesday, September 14 at 6:30 pm in the Coddington Building and broadcast on QATV Channel 22 and livestreamed on qatv.org.

While you enjoy the last few days of summer vacation, please note the calendar for the opening days of school below.  Your principal will be happy to answer any questions you might have related to the opening of school or feel free to contact my office at 617-984-8701.
