Quincy Public Schools is pleased to announce its newest initiative to help high school students explore career training options offered at Quincy High School. This web site and its accompanying career guide will give students and parents a comprehensive look at 15 Career & Technical Education training programs offered by QPS.
Career & Technical Education programs prepare students for a wide variety of careers including professional programs such as engineering and nursing. Career & Technical training works for students who are looking for immediate employment or other post-secondary education options.
QPS recognizes that while college is the right choice for many students, for some students, a shorter career training path makes more sense. Great careers are available with 1- and 2-year certificates, and through union training programs for students in many areas including health care, automotive, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
For students planning on attending college, many of QPS's Career & Technical Education programs are specifically designed to give students a competitive edge in gaining acceptance to elite programs. Students in health care get hands on practical experience working at Quincy Medical Center and various senior care facilities. Students in the engineering program follow a nationally-recognized engineering curriculum. Students in graphic arts programs get exposure to the latest software and create multimedia portfolios. Broadcasting students create and air everything from local news to documentaries. All our Career & Technical Education students have similar opportunities in their career major to get the experience, education, and training to leave high school confident in their ability and choices and ready to enter or begin additional training for a well-paying career.
Students also have the opportunity to engage in internships, job shadowing, and work experiences with many local employers. Community service is offered through local government and non-profit institutions in our community. This provides students a real-world appreciation and view of the career they are considering. QPS prides itself on the extensive relationships they have built with our many local businesses. These businesses unselfishly donate money, time, materials, and manpower to our schools. We are grateful to our engaged business community which includes our Quincy School-Community Partners.
"QPS is focused on providing career training for students. Our students attend top-notch college programs for engineering and health care. Electrical, plumbing, and carpentry students complete hours of training for union licensing programs while still in high school. Culinary students win national awards and scholarships to cooking schools. Our automotive students are actively recruited into great career training paths right out of high school," said Keith Segalla, Executive Director of Career & Technical Education and Instructional Technology. "We are justifiably proud of their accomplishments and achievements."
Parents and students are invited to explore this website and download a copy of the career guide.
