Math Fluency Doesn't Just Happen hosted by Ann Elise Record
Family Math Night & Resources to Keep the Learning Going at Home!
We’re excited to have you in our community focused on helping children grow as math thinkers! Our Parent Academy at Marshall School for Family Math Night highlighted how kids learn math today in ways that differ from our own school experiences.
You can support your child at home with fun, hands-on games and conversations!
The Padlet page, created by the presenter Ann Elise Record is a collection of activities, games, and resources just for families. Check it out: https://tinyurl.com/RecordFamilies
How We’re Exploring Math at Each Stage:
Kindergarten: Counting Phase
Our youngest learners are in the counting phase, learning to count objects and recognize quantities quickly (subitizing). You can support this at home with dice and card games, and by helping your child break down numbers (like showing that 5 is 2 and 3).
Grades 1-2: Additive Reasoning Phase
In Grades 1-2, we focus on Additive Reasoning, helping children understand how numbers relate. For example, if they know 6 + 6 = 12, they can deduce that 6 + 7 = 13. Breaking apart numbers to make 10, like turning 8 + 5 into 10 + 3, is also important. These strategies lay a strong foundation for more complex math concepts, including addition, subtraction, decimals, and fractions.
Grades 3-5: Multiplicative Reasoning Phase
Students learn that multiplication represents groups of groups. For example, knowing 5 x 8 = 40 helps them reason that 6 x 8 is 8 more, yielding 48. This phase also involves division and the relationships between multiplication facts.
Keep the Math Talk Going!
We encourage you to make math a regular part of your home conversations, just like reading stories together. Explore the resources at https://tinyurl.com/RecordFamilies for ideas that make learning math fun and engaging.
