Quincy School Committee
Facilities & Security Subcommittee Meeting
February 6, 2017
A meeting of the Facilities & Security Subcommittee was held on Monday, February 6, 2017 at 5:45
pm in the Coddington Building. Present were Mr. Paul Bregoli, Mr. James DeAmicis, Ms. Barbara
Isola, Mrs. Emily Lebo, Mrs. Anne Mahoney, and Mrs. Kathryn Hubley, Chair. Also attending were
Superintendent DeCristofaro, Deputy Superintendent Kevin Mulvey, Mr. Michael Draicchio, Mrs.
Maura Papile, Ms. Madeline Roy, Mr. Keith Segalla; Quincy Education Association President Allison
Cox; and Ms. Laura Owens, Clerk.
Mrs. Hubley called the meeting to order at 5:45 pm and introduced Director of Safety & Security
Michael Draicchio to update on several issues. Mr. Draicchio said new signage has been installed in
the parking lots at Atherton Hough, Squantum, Della Chiesa Early Childhood Center, and Quincy High
School to assist with safety around the school. The Department of Public Works installed the signage
for designated parking and to inform the public that the parking is reserved for school staff. Mrs.
Hubley asked about a larger sign for the Snug Harbor parking lot entrance and that is still pending.
Mr. Draicchio said that there is a new sign at Snug Harbor indicating no left hand turns into staff
parking lot, will work with City Councilor Laforest and the Traffic Department to see if it can be
removed. The sign was installed without notification to the school, based on a neighborhood
concern. Ms. Isola and Mrs. Mahoney both asked for information on the rationale and Mr. Draicchio
will provide additional information. In his observation, there was not an issue with traffic in this area.
Dr. DeCristofaro, Mrs. Hubley, and Mr. Draicchio have all observed the Snug Harbor traffic in the back
of the school, minimal issues at this time. Parents are not allowed to pull into parking lot to ensure
safety of parents and students walking to drop students off at the back door. Administrative staff are
continuing to monitor the traffic, one parent had requested a different dropoff route, but this is not
feasible. Mrs. Hubley said she has had several days of observation, there didn’t seem to be any
issues, although it could be more complicated when snow is on the ground.
Mr. Draicchio updated on the new Howard Johnson hotel under the Windham Hotel chain (formerly
the Presidents City Inn). Mr. Draicchio met with the general manager and toured the facility, the
property is fully fenced and has video security. Mr. Draicchio also met with Quincy Police Chief
Keenan to review any calls over the last year from the address, nothing major or out of the ordinary.
Mr. Draicchio expressed a positive feeling about the new facility, the manager is interested in
becoming a business partner for Central Middle School next door.
Mr. Bregoli made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 5:55 pm. Mrs. Lebo seconded the motion and
on a voice vote, the ayes have it.
